Nurse with Patient

Benefits of being a nurse

1. Personally rewarding

Nursing is often considered one of the most personally and professionally fulfilling careers that anyone can do. Nurses provide care for unwell patients, trying to improve their health alongside a doctor’s treatment and advice. This enables nurses to directly help and care for those in need.

2. Job security

As mentioned, nurses are in high demand in many parts of the world, both in developing and more economically developed countries. The table below shows the average employment rates of nursing graduates in three popular study destinations. These figures are comparatively higher than in other fields. Nurses will always be necessary and so you can be confident about finding a job once graduating with a nursing degree.

3. Internationally employable

There are nursing shortages all across the world with the UK even declaring this limitation a national emergency in 2018. There are various reasons for this, depending on the region but one cause can be an ageing population and workforce.

This makes nurses employable in many parts of the world where hospitals, surgeries and clinics need all the help they can get to serve their patients. So, if you decided to spend a year abroad, you should have no issue finding work as a nurse. For example, in Australia, nurses are in high demand and so there are several visas offered to nurses emigrating to Australia. Having a nursing qualification in this country can lead to faster visa processing times and permanent residency.

4. Option of overtime

If you’re looking to earn some additional money, you can take on extra shifts as a nurse. Your pay will also increase when working bank holidays or weekends, depending on the country. In the UK, the hourly rate for nurses is doubled on bank holidays. However, nursing shifts can be extremely tiring, so over time should be considered with caution.
